Funding available to commercialize advanced computing technologies

MTRAC, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is looking to fund very early-stage technologies and translational research teams with an intent to commercialize.

Are you a researcher with an advanced computing technology idea you would like to license to a company or turn into a startup?

The Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (MTRAC) Innovation Hub for Advanced Computing Technologies based at Wayne State encourages translational research teams to apply for funding of up to $100,000 to help commercialize advanced computing technologies.

MTRAC, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is looking to fund very early-stage technologies and translational research teams with an intent to commercialize. Those receiving grants must provide a 50% institutional match; for WSU teams, the Office of Vice President Research has committed to provide the matching funds as part of its continuing commitment to support the commercialization of WSU innovations.

Kim

Edward Kim, the program director of MTRAC Innovation Hub for Advanced Computing Technology (ACT), encourages people to apply. The application deadline is Aug. 31, 2021.

The MTRAC ACT grant application process is also designed to emulate the requirements and structure for larger federal innovation grants such as NSF Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) proposals.

“Innovation grants have different requirements and expectations than typical research grant proposals researchers are used to,” said Kim. “So, this is a great, risk-free way to gain experience if the researcher is considering pursuing innovation grants.

“The valuable feedback and mentorship provided by the MTRAC ACT Oversight Committee — made up of technologists, entrepreneurs and tech investors — helps to de-risk the lab-driven proof of concept to validate the commercial viability of the innovation.”

The hub has funded six teams in the last two years, four from Wayne State.

Stawiasz

“Five out of the six have gone on to secure an additional $1 million in follow-on funding within a 12-month period of the project launch,” said Bramdon Stawiasz, project manager in Tech Commercialization.

Areas available for funding include:

  • Cognitive Computing: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Advanced Analytics, Data Mining, Natural Language Processing, Robotic Process Automation
  • Immersive Technologies: Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, Virtual Reality
  • Cybersecurity: Trusted Authentication, Disaster Recovery, Computer Forensics, Identity Management
  • Internet of Things (IoT): Smart Spaces, Sensors, Network Advancement
  • Industry x.0: Advancements in digital convergence between cyber and physical systems
  • Blockchain: Shared Distributed Ledger, Traceability, Trustless System
  • Next Generation Computing: Quantum, Neuromorphic, Edge, Virtual Systems, 5G

In addition to applying for MTRAC Advanced Computing funding, researchers are encouraged to apply to other MTRAC Innovation Hubs in Michigan:
