FLINT, MI -- Mott Community College is partnering with Consumers Energy to become a training site for the Electric Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program.

MCC’s Workforce and Economic Development Department will host the program that will prep students for careers as electrical powerline installers and distribution systems.

The program takes a three-month commitment for completion, according to a Mott Community College news release.

“Many people rely on electrical powerline installers and repairers every day,” Associate Vice President for Workforce and Economic Development Robert Matthews said. “This career field is growing, with more than 100 job openings each year, and a pay range of $60,000+ annually. This a wonderful opportunity to get the skills training needed for a high-demand career.”

Completion of the program does not guarantee employment with Consumers Energy, per the news release. Lineworkers maintain and update the utility’s equipment based on customer need and electricity demand.

“You can go anywhere in the world or anywhere in the county with this particular trade because the demand for energy is so high, and it keeps growing,” said Dale Nicholson, an overhead apprentice lineworker at the Redford Service Center.

It is an eight-step program where students must take foundational courses at MCC, complete drug screenings, attend Consumers Energy climbing clinics and an 11-week climb school.

For enrollment information, visit MCC’s EMPOWER program site.

Summer and fall registration are now open at Mott Community College. Consumers Energy’s headquarters is located in Jackson, Michigan.
