Watch Recording Below:

For this year’s annual Family Caregiver Symposium, we invited two remarkable international speakers to help you discover practical strategies and tools to navigate your caregiving journey. Dr. Aaron Blight, a world-class speaker, consultant, and author specializes in caregiving, aging, and healthcare. His presence was an absolute hit at last year’s symposium, and due to popular demand, we are thrilled to have him back. Dr. Blight explained how caregivers can improve their capacity by adapting to their loved one’s ever-changing circumstances. We were also excited to welcome Dr. Robert J. Wicks, Professor Emeritus at Loyola University, and author of over 60 books. He discussed resilience, self-care, and the integration of psychology and classic spiritual approaches to maintain a healthy perspective. Jayme West, KTAR 92.3 FM, Arizona’s Morning News, moderated the symposium.

Topic: How Caregivers Learn: A Pattern of Role Development

Most caregivers are not innately endowed with the ability to deliver tasks of care, but they can grow into an emerging caregiver role. A care receiver’s evolving health conditions prompt caregivers to formulate responses which are appropriate for their ever-changing circumstances. As caregivers adjust to changes, they unconsciously develop an improved capacity to serve. This presentation raises consciousness of caregiver development, and can accelerate caregiver growth, by focusing on the learning process inherent in caregiving.

Topic: The Resilient Caregivers: Recognizing, Preventing, and Limiting Dangers of Secondary Stress

One of the greatest gifts caregivers can share is a sense of their own resilience and a healthy perspective.  However, they can’t share what they don’t have.  Dr. Robert Wicks, an expert on the prevention of secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others), will discuss psychological and classic spiritual approaches to maintaining a healthy perspective and enhancing resilience in challenging times. He offers insights into how caregivers can develop a more resilient life and, in turn, extend their strength and warmth to others without losing their own inner fire in the process.
