Happy Economic Development week! What does Economic Development mean to me? It means working together intentionally as a region and state to create a better life for Michiganders by assisting to create good paying jobs! How do we do it? How are we doing it? Collaborating and strategizing. The Detroit Regional Partnership's Real Estate Team Julia Pilarski, Gregory Holman, AICP Justin Robinson, Denise Murray and I are vetting and cataloguing industrial "Dirt" one step at a time, one site at a time. We shave off as much as 9-12 months of due diligence time depending on the site. We started with 9 pilot sites and now have 84 active, vetted, catalogued vacant industrial sites with extensive research reports, maps and drone video so site consultants never have to leave their living room. This makes it easier for site consultants and companies to get to "yes" saving them time and money. Companies have a choice and we want them to choose our 11-County region. In our continuing series during #EconDevWeek, we wanted to highlight how company growth and attraction affects our communities and our city. Battle Creek is on the rise. Strategic economic development has led to major investments, new business expansions, and the creation of quality jobs across the city. The products and solutions that our companies build have a local, national, and global impact. From 2018 to 2023, we attracted 21 companies and 906 jobs were created as a result of new investment and expansions - exceeding our strategic plan goals for that period - and we were just getting started. 2024 was a momentous year for announcements, investments, and celebrations - including the completion of Duncan Aviation's new hangar space, the Viking-Cives Great Lakes ribbon cutting, the completion of the Spec 2 building, Musashi's new assembly and demo space, and more. As we look ahead to 2030, BCU's strategic plan emphasizes growth and an innovation-driven economy - ensuring that every part of our community benefits from the momentum we’re building. From advanced manufacturing to food innovation, energy, and aviation & defense we are looking ahead while building on our current successes and acknowledging our innovative past.
